Steps to Take When Your iPhone is Lost or Stolen

Logging into Find My iPhone on another iOS device or through iCloud.com is the first step to take when you can't find your iPhone. Whether it's been lost or stolen, if it has power and is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network, the approximate location of the iPhone will show up on a map. If the iPhone runs out of battery, loses its connection, or is turned off, Find My iPhone will show the last known location for 24 hours. After that, it can't be located again until functionality is restored. Activate Lost Mode Along with establishing a location for a lost device, Find My iPhone can be used to lock that device down through Lost Mode. Lost Mode displays a phone number and a message on the iPhone's screen, leaving everything else inaccessible. If you didn't have a passcode set up, Lost Mode will prevent your iPhone from being used. Lost Mode can be turned on by following the steps below.
  1. Go to iCloud.com or open the Find My iPhone app on another device. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  2. On the web, click on "All Devices" and find the missing device in the list. On iOS, scroll down to the missing device and tap it.
  3. On the web, a menu will pop up with the option to play a sound, erase the phone, or enable Lost Mode. On the iPhone, tap "Actions" to get to this menu. Choose Lost Mode.
  4. If activating Lost Mode on a device without a passcode, you will be prompted to create one.
  5. You'll be asked to enter a phone number where you can be contacted. Enter the number or choose "Next" to skip the option.
  6. At the next screen, you can write a message that will be displayed on the iPhone, such as an email address or a reward offering.
  7. Choose "Done" to activate Lost Mode and then check "Notify if Found." The iPhone is now locked and can only be accessed using the passcode you designated when turning on Lost Mode or the passcode that was already on the device. If it's offline and later located, you will get an email when it connects to the Internet and can convey its location.
With Lost Mode activated, the iPhone's screen will display the phone number and the message you set. On a device with a cellular connection, there will also be a "Call" option to call the specified number. Emergency phone numbers are still able to be called as well. Activating Lost Mode immediately disables credit or debit cards associated with Apple Pay , activates Low Power mode for maximum battery life, and renders all features on the iPhone, such as Siri , inaccessible. The two other options in Find My iPhone are "Play Sound" and "Erase iPhone," both of which are straightforward. "Play Sound" causes a loud beeping to occur, which can be turned off by hitting the power button on the iPhone. It's useful for an iPhone that's been misplaced nearby. Erase iPhone will delete all of the data on the iPhone remotely. It should be used as a last resort because erasing the iPhone will make it inaccessible through Find My iPhone. With Activation Lock, a passcode, and Lost Mode, an iPhone is essentially locked down, but erasing data can give peace of mind if you lose a device you don't expect to get back. Lost Mode, Play Sound, and Erase iPhone will only work when the iPhone is turned on and has a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. If it is off or unable to connect to the Internet, these actions will be queued and activated as soon as a connection is available. Lost Mode combined with "Notify if Found" will send you an email when a misplaced iPhone that is offline can connect to the Internet. If Lost, Use the Find My iPhone Map If your iPhone has been left behind in a restaurant or store and you're not sure where it was misplaced, Find My iPhone gives a close approximation of its location. If it's in an apartment building or other dense urban area, it might not be able to pinpoint the exact spot where it is, but it can get close. As long as your iPhone is on and has a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, its location will be continually updated in the Find My iPhone app so it's easy to track down. With a phone number and other contact information available through Lost Mode, someone who finds it can easily contact you. If Stolen, Contact the Police If your iPhone has been stolen, Find My iPhone can help law enforcement ascertain its location. It can be tempting to go to the location of a stolen iPhone on your own, but doing so can be dangerous . When dealing with an unknown criminal element, getting the police involved is the safest move. Report Lost iPhone to Carrier The four major carriers in the United States, AT&T , Verizon , Sprint , and T-Mobile , have tools for reporting a smartphone as stolen to suspend service and in some cases, block the device from being used on the carrier's network. Suspending cellular service will prevent your iPhone from connecting to a cellular network, making it more difficult to track. It ensures a thief cannot use the device to make phone calls or rack up service charges, but in many cases, those features will be unavailable anyway.

How to secretly track someone else's iPhone using Find My Friends:

Step 1: Share location.

At the bottom of the interface of the app, you'll find the contact icon. Tap that. Then toggle on "Share my location."

Step 2: Send Location to your iPhone.

Make sure your own iPhone is available to "everyone." Then use their iPhone account, tap 'add', then tap on their contact image, and then tap on "Share Indefinitely." Now you have total unrestricted access to their phone for as long as you like.

Step 3: Accept the Location.

On your iPhone you'll receive a message that they're sharing a Location with you, "Accept" it. When asked if you'd like to share your own location as well, select "Don't Share." This is important if you don't wanna' get caught.

Step 4: Get your Spy on!

Finally, you just have to access your own Find My Friends app and you'll receive all their movements on your Map!

Step 5: Hide the Icon.

This step is entirely optional, if you want to further ensure that you aren't detected. There is a slight possibility that the person might access their app and try and find out who they're sharing their locations with. If you remove the icon from the dock, the chances of that may be lowered.

Although this is a pretty cool means of tracking someone without them knowing, it isn't a 100% fool-proof. You might get caught if the person you are tracking is very tech savvy, or if he/she is vigilant with apps. If you want to make sure you are not detected, you can read the next method.

So now you know the different ways to track iPhone without app. You also know what to do if you fail at tracking your iPhone, and you also know how to secretly track someone else's iPhone. Any kind of individual geotracking may sound unnerving at first, but if you can control who is able to see your location and when, it can be a convenient way of keeping an eye on the kids, making sure everyone meets at the same bar, or working out how long it’ll be before your better half gets home from work. Here are six apps specifically for the job.

Find My Friends

Now a default native app inside iOS (one you can’t get rid of), Find My Friends links with your Apple ID and enables you to share your location with the people of your choice. It’s possible to temporarily disable location sharing at any time, and on a device-by-device basis if you have multiple iOS gadgets.

Linked friends and family show up on a map and this being Apple it works seamlessly across various apps on iOS and OS X—the most recent addition was an iCloud component that lets you track your contacts on the web. If all of your friends are on Android or Windows however, then you’re out of luck.

Google+

Once upon a time there was a half-decent service called Google Latitude —after it was shut down, some of its features eventually got folded into Google+, including location tracking. Open the Locations entry on the menu inside the Google+ app for Android to see your contacts on a map.

Unfortunately for location-tracking enthusiasts, this feature doesn’t seem to be a high priority for Google. You need to head to the main Google app to configure your location settings and define who can see where you are, and at the moment there’s no map available on the web or inside the iOS app.

Glympse

If you want an independent, cross-platform, third-party location sharing service that isn’t tied to iOS or Android then Glympse is just about your best option right now. It’s primary reason for being is location sharing, so there are a ton of features included to make the service as useful as possible.

You control not just the people can see your location but how long they’re able to view it for, and there’s a web interface if you’re sat at a computer. The app’s versatile enough to do everything from organizing a group night out to telling your boss you’re running late, and messaging tools are included too.

Swarm

Swarm’s main focus is checking into places and competing against your friends to earn more points along the way, but being able to see whereabouts your friends are is another component of the app. In the meantime, Foursquare has retreated to focusing on being more like Yelp.

The app includes features for finding out which of your friends are hanging out nearby, and you can use the integrated messaging component to arrange a meet-up. You don’t get the same real-time tracking you do with other apps, but it’s a bit more user-friendly and more helpful for casual get-togethers.

Connect

Connect has a strong social element running through it and plugs into other networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare and others to keep you in touch with the people you’re closest to (literally and figuratively). The app includes integrated group messaging and photo sharing as well.

Locations can be pulled from (and shared to) existing social networks but through Connect itself it’s possible to share real-time location information and view other people’s locations on a map. If you can get all of your friends (or relatives) to install it, Connect is one of the best options out there.

Family Locator

If Connect leans more towards your friends, Family Locator is more concerned with your nearest and dearest family members. As well as letting you plot the position of your kids or spouse on a map, it includes integrated messaging features, check-ins (both automatic and manual) and more besides.

Like Google+, you can sort your contacts into ‘circles’ to categorize them more easily and make sure your map isn’t overwhelmed with pins, and there’s the option to get automatic push notifications whenever people leave from or arrive at a place (the kids getting home from school, for example).
